Managing Parenthood During the Summer

FPC therapist and mom Kaitlyn Kurtovic, MA, LMHC is excited about summertime with her family.   As we hit up the beach and pool with our little ones we hope that children are living their best life as we make sure to apply sunscreen, monitor the water play, pack enough snacks, and keep our sanity in check-all at once!   But while the summer with the kids can be a happy, exciting time for families it can also be stressful for mothers (and fathers!) who do not seem to have enough time to keep their children occupied along with taking care of their needs.   She shares some of her tips to help keep your self care at the forefront:

Get enough sleep

Sleep can be hard for many parents, especially if their children are young, however getting to bed at a decent time and keeping a healthy sleep schedule can make a world of a difference to enjoy summer with the kids all day and night!

Hydration

Being in the sun all day can be incredibly dehydrating. While the children have their water bottles, make sure you carry one as well. Dehydration can not only zap you of the energy you need to keep up but it can exacerbate mental health symptoms.

Schedule indoor summer with the kids playtime

While being outside is fun, being indoors can also have its benefits. Seeking out a children’s playplace while your littles play can be relaxing as you can have a little “me” time while they are occupied.

Seek out other parent friends

The benefits of a social group are enormous. Socializing can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, but also provide another person to have “adult conversations” with. This also provides chances of setting up playdates!
