Enjoying winter peace with Danish Hygge
By: FPC therapist Kerry A. Simizon, MHC
Dark, dreary, cold, flu… It’s the thick of the winter and, although we’re lucky to experience what each of the four seasons offer, many are becoming antsy in anticipation of spring. The Danes may have a solution for us. Copenhagen and New York City experience similar chilly temperatures and dark days, yet Denmark is among the happiest countries in the world. How do they managed to maintain their positivity in the coldness? It’s all in a positive winter mindset.
Introducing Hygge
In Denmark, the population embraces the winter months by taking the opportunity to slow down. Hygge (“hue-guh”) is a word that describes comfort, coziness, and contentment. This has evolved into a concept that makes winter less harsh and more tranquil.
Comfort Setting
Think: fuzzy socks, cable knit sweaters, and sherpa blankets. Pair this with a warm candle beside a crackling fire, and your loved one’s company. Maybe the aroma of cookies baking in the oven is making its way from room to room, and you’re at peace in your home as snow blankets the calm earth. All is well. Ah… That’s the positive winter mindset!
Awaken your five senses!
Start a checklist of creating your positive winter mindset through sight, smell, sound, taste and touch. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
Sight: fireplace, snowy days, calm lighting
Smell: candles, baked goods, fresh laundry
Sound: music, crackling fire, loved one’s stories
Taste: warm drinks, hearty meals, chocolate truffles
Touch: blankets, pet snuggles, warm clothing
Self-Care in your Hygge Space
As the winter months begin to drag, creating a hygge space may alleviate the negative aspects of the season. Cater to each sense, and consider the sights, sounds, tastes, touches, and smells that you find comforting and can bring into your home. Most importantly, consider who adds to your peace and can spend this quality time with you. With just a few simple steps, you can bring that Danish feeling of peace and comfort even in the cold of winter months. A positive winter mindset is waiting for you!
