Strategies for a Successful College Experience

Going away to college is certainly a significant life transition. It can be a challenging time for young graduates. The idea is often intimidating and the process can be a bit difficult to navigate. FPC therapist Daniel Nodiff, MA, LMHC shares his expert advice on balancing responsibilities and reducing stress as you head away to college.

Take Time for Self-Care

Between classes, studying, and keeping up with assignments it is important to make some time for some self-care! Whether you are considering joining a club, looking to make some new friends, or enjoying one of your hobbies, you can reduce your stress levels by taking some time to yourself. Even just 20 minutes a day of self-care can be meaningful, and can help you to recharge.

Stay on Top of Responsibilities

When you’re on your own for the first time, prioritizing tasks such as laundry or eating meals can be a challenge. By creating a routine or a schedule that works for you, you can avoid falling behind and feeling overwhelmed by the tasks that you have to complete.  Set some time aside to make some of your responsibilities a priority.

Manage School Assignments

In college you may have large assignments or projects which you could be given several weeks to complete. “Chunking” is an important tool you can use to break larger assignments into smaller pieces so that they are more manageable. If you have to write an essay, try writing one paragraph a day and set the essay aside for another day or two before you proofread and edit it. The smaller the pieces, the more manageable the whole assignment can become.

Make Mistakes, It’s OK!

Part of learning and growing is to make mistakes! When trying new things or learning how to adjust to the next phase of your life it’s OK to make some mistakes. Making mistakes is how we learn a better way to do things. Jump in, and see how it goes… and be willing to try again if the outcome was different than what you expected.
