Learning how to stop

Re-training the automatic responses of our mind

How many of you know what you should do in a moment, but when the moment arrives, you just can’t seem to make that preferred choice? That’s because in the moment, the pre-programmed subconscious will keep going in that old, often unwanted direction unless the action comes to a halt. Unlock the key to making change happen in your life. Learn how to stop in decision-making moments and retrain your mind for a better future. Certified Clinical Hypnotist, Judy D. Sherman, shares some insights on how to retrain your mind to push pause.

Set a timer

No kidding…. learning how to stop is a process that begins with the reminder TO stop. Set an alarm on your phone from 2 – 3 times a day and after silencing the alarm notification, take a moment to stop what you are doing, breathe and refocus your mind. Even if it’s just for 20 seconds, you are beginning to teach your mind how to pause.

Use a visual reminder

We all respond in a similar way when we see a stop sign. So… print one out and put it in an area where you spend alot of your “busy” time. Your office or work space, the kitchen or even near your favorite chair by the TV. If you see it, you will be reminder to do it.

Imagine a place of peace

Give yourself a mental snap shot of a perfect place of peace — real or imagined — and use that mental picture when you take a moment to stop. Bonus is that this perfect place of peace is always available to you — so go there often when you need to take a break from a stressful moment or situation.

Learning how to stop is just the beginning of embracing the power of any lifestyle change. The more often you stop in regular moments the easier it will become when you really need to take that mental time out in challenging moments.
