Mastering Self-Care While Supporting Loved Ones
Family is an important factor in the lives of most people. To watch a family member experience physical, mental, and emotional challenges can be stressful. As a caregiver, it is important to maintain your own wellness. Remember, you cannot take care of anyone unless you take care of yourself first. Here’s what FPC Clinical Director Erika Isaksen, LMHC, NCC has to say about maintaining balance and find care for the caregiver:
Managing Overwhelm
When someone in our family requires extra assistance and care, it can feel challenging and overwhelming. This is why rule #1 for caregivers is to practice frequent self-care. Staying on top of your own health and wellness will make coping manageable and reduce those overwhelming feelings.
Scheduling “Me Time”
Take time out for yourself. Schedule “Me Time” on your daily calendar. Do something to pamper yourself or just take some time each day to be still. Practice deep breathing, sitting in silence, and visualization of your favorite place. All of these are great ways to relax.
Finding Support
Try to meet people who appreciate and understand your situation. Join a support group. Support groups are a great way to get to know people who are in the same circumstance as you are. Talking to people is a great way to learn how other people cope and manage day-to-day challenges.
Communicating with Loved Ones
Share your challenges and feelings with family members and friends. Your family and friends can’t help if they are unaware of what you need. Never be afraid to ask for help.
Seeking Professional Help
Find a great therapist! Weekly therapy is the best gift you can give yourself and help you to make sure you find “care for the caregiver.” Having weekly personal space to vent and talk to someone makes a world of difference in managing the challenges of life!
